The title of Presage comes from the ominous character of the first theme of the piece which the muted trumpet and horn present against the percussive chords of the orchestra in the slow introduction. A dynamic Allegro follows where two more ideas are presented and developed with elements of the Introduction. The tension in the music grows and the piece culminates with the fatal re-exposition of the first theme brightly orchestrated, under the threat of the timpani. The music calms into a mysterious ending full of “presages”. Presage is orchestrated for flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, horn, trumpet, 1 percussionist and strings. It was composed in the summer of 1984.
