This work for clarinet and piano is written in the style of a baroque dance suite. Formally, each dance is constructed according to simple binary or ternary structures. The first dance begins with an introduction, as a Prelude, whose thematic material will serve to close the piece, as a coda. In the second dance, each iteration of the main material is treated as variations. The third and fourth dances adhere to a simple A-B-A’ form while the sixth is structured as a rondo. The fifth dance, with its extensive clarinet cadence, pays humble homage to Olivier Messiaen.
