As its title suggests, Intrepid is a brilliant and euphoric work of direct impact. It is a symphonic movement in ternary form: Allegro-Lento-Allegro, where the last part is more a development tan a recapitulation.

The initial Allegro has two parts, the first eminently rhythmic dominated by metals, and a more lyrical second one presented by the cellos and followed by the oboe. The development of this part takes us to a spectacular crescendo of great tension until its completion.

The central Lento is deeper and more expressive. The English horn presents a new theme of gloomy character under a harp accompaniment which with its repetition by the violins, acquires dramatic tension. After a sudden distension, a dialogue between the solo violin and vibraphone appears and culminates with the reappearance of the English horn theme, now brilliantly in the French horns.

The Allegro reexposes in a delicate and pointillist way the material presented in the first part. A Coda, dominated by the percussion, mixes different thematic material in a rousing finale.
