When the Chicago Clarinet Ensemble asked Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr to perform a concerto with them in 2012, her immediate thought was that the Double Concerto No. 2 for violin and clarinet of James Niblock, though originally with orchestral accompaniment, would work well with a clarinet ensemble accompaniment.
James Butler successfully adapted the original for the clarinet group. The first performance using the new instrumentation was on April 21, 2012 by the Chicago Clarinet Ensemble with soloists Walter Verdehr, violin and Elsa Ludewig-Verdehr, clarinet.
