Reed Quintet was written at the request of the Barcelona Reed Quintet, an original ensemble born from the Barcelona Symphonic Band. The originality of the ensemble and the enthusiasm of the performers for a new work encouraged me to adapt my Sax-Wind Quintet Op. 15 for clarinet / Eb clarinet, oboe, alto saxophone, bass clarinet and bassoon.
Without interruption and in one movement, the work begins with a slow chorale. The saxophone presents the first lyrical theme under a clarinet counterpoint. After a brief development and reexposition of the theme more brilliantly orchestrated, a burlesque Allegretto follows in which the oboe introduces a second theme. The bassoon develops it in a vibrant Presto of great instrumental virtuosity. After a central part, rhythmically more relaxed and expressive, a reexposition of the Presto leads up to a peak of tension and a stop. A timid memory of the first theme is then presented by the saxophone which leads to a very rapid and fugacious Coda.
