The piece “Leda i els cignes” (Leda and the Swans), composed for  flute trio and clarinet, is intended for students in the final year of the elementary level and the first cycle of the intermediate level, and has a duration of approximately seven minutes.

The piece revolves around the close relationship between ancient Greek mythology and music. Leda was seduced by Zeus (the supreme god of Greek religion), who appeared in the form of a swan (a bird with a heavenly voice and song).

“Leda i els cignes” comes in two versions:

  • As a musical work to be performed as written, with the instrumental lineup described in the score; it can be adapted for a flute quartet (with the fourth flute as soloist) and can also be transcribed for a string quartet.
  • As a work designed to incorporate body movement into specific passages of the score, as described in the Teaching Unit. This second version incorporates a dialogue between music and body movement, suggesting a physical response to the musical idea and phrasing.

“Leda i els cignes” is a cross-curricular project that brings together three inspiring areas:

  • Newly composed music.
  • The history of music in Ancient Greece, the foundation of modern musical thought.
  • Body movement. A source of ideas and a reflection of music’s influence as a catalyst for physical response.
