The first movement is Broadway, the most famous avenue in Manhattan (the popular neighbourhood of New York) which, among other things, is known for being the avenue where most musicals are represented. The sounds of this piece are reminiscent of Frank Sinatra’s songs or the movies of Ginger Rogers and Fred Astaire. The second movement is Mexico. This is a Mexican ballad, with a slow initial part which then increases in speed to become more danceable. The third is Cuba. Here the movement seeks to represent the essence of Cuban music. The piece is full of syncopation, accents on the last eighth note of the bar, and above all, the famous Cuban tumbao. The fourth, Brazil, is in a Samba style, like Mexico, with a slow part which later accelerates. Accents are also characteristic here. And to finish, Argentina concludes this imaginary journey from north to south, with one of the great American genres, the Argentinean tango, where the clarinet shines out even more.
