Margarida Orfila composed this trio in 1945, in full compositional maturity, after having written other chamber works such as Frisança, Barcarola and Scherzando for violin and piano and Llegenda and Tarantella for cello and piano. It consists of a single movement and has the alternative title of Largo espressivo. We find inspired melodic designs that pass from one instrument to the other in a serene and expressive dialogue mode, as well as delicious modulations that provide the harmonic contrast so characteristic of Orfila’s music. The composer herself made a version of this work for quartet of violin, viola, cello and double bass.
