Fantaisie 1 e la notte… (2023)
Solo viola
Recalling the rich literature for violas of French Baroque music, the first movement evokes the air of the courtly Loure dance with its characteristic rhythm of ternary subdivision.
The 2nd movement begins with a short introduction on double strings in the manner of the solemn Pavane dance, giving way to a fast section of great virtuosity full of arpeggios, chromaticisms, harmonics…
The third movement, entitled e la notte…, is an introverted finale in total contrast to the previous movements. The silences and the long notes (mainly in harmonics), suggest calm and paused music, with brief gestures that recall what happened in the previous movements.
FANTAISIES
Following the commission from the Spanish Flute Association (AFE) for his Fantaisie V for solo flute in 2017, Jesús González begins his series of Fantaisies for solo instrument.
The pieces are freely inspired by both Telemann’s Fantasies without bass and the brilliant Fantaisies of French Baroque music. Works of considerable difficulty and virtuosity, they require great mastery on the part of the musician to showcase a wide range of resources and possibilities on contemporary instruments.
They evoke the air and forms of Baroque music, Renaissance music, and Gregorian chant. Keeping in mind the period in which they were composed, the evolution of the pieces is created through gestures that suggest a distant memory of the Fantaisies, but with the spirit and resources of contemporary music.
