“A Dirge” was written by Shelley after the deaths of his son William [age 3] and his good friend John Keats [age 25]. A year later, Shelley himself died at age 29, and the poem was published posthumously. My musical setting is dedicated to the memory of my great friend and former colleague, the clarinetist Gary Davis.

The work is part of a series of five pieces for voice and various woodwind instruments under the general title “Dark Windsongs,” which can be performed either individually or as a set.
