A few months after we were informed of the death of the composer Esperanza Zubieta, and once the sad news has been assimilated, we want to pay her a well-deserved tribute, recalling some of her compositions. The memory of her person will remain among those of us who knew her and her music will endure beyond the moment.

Esperanza Zubieta Trives was born in Colindres (Cantabria) in 1963. She began her musical studies at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música “Jesús de Monasterio” in Santander, continuing at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música “Ataúlfo Argenta”. She moved to the Music Conservatory “Juan Crisóstomo Arriaga” in Bilbao, where she obtained the Higher Degree in music theory, music theory, transposition and accompaniment. She has finished her studies in Composition at the Conservatorio de Música de San Sebastián, obtaining the Higher Degree in harmony, counterpoint, composition and instrumentation.
She combines her academic training with work as a teacher of Musical Language, Complementary Piano, Harmony and Accompaniment at the Conservatorio Profesional de Música “Jesús de Monasterio”, from September 1991 to June 2004. Afterwards, she held the position of Head of the Department of Musical Language, during the academic years 2004/2005 and 2005/2006, at the Conservatorio Elemental de Torrelavega.
She has composed several works for piano, guitar, flute and piano, choir, chamber orchestra, band music, popular songs, Christmas carols, etc., some of which have already been premiered. She is the author of the prelude for guitar “…through a window”, premiered in 2009 within the musical Saturdays cycle, as well as and within the same cycle, two works for flute and piano: Recuerdos de viaje and Desolación y fantasía, in 2010. Composer of the Sinfonía cántabra; performed by various choirs from Cantabria and the Santander Municipal Band, at the Santander Sports Palace on August 10, 2010, on the X Anniversary of the Gala del Folklore Cántabro.
Author of Tres piezas para dos flautas y piano, premiered at VII Musical Saturdays, March 2011 and her first work published by Editorial B&M Llevant, Edicions Musicals SL, with whom she signs a contract for the edition, reproduction and distribution of her works in February 2011. Signing a second contract, later, with the Musicvall publishing house, Edicions Musicals CB, from Valencia and that has already published her first fantasy for cello and piano “…entre las aguas”.
Esperanza died on 25th of November, 2022.
