At the very beginning of the work, the winds and strings play separately, and each group has its own characteristic musical materials. Winds: minor seconds & minor thirds, diminished 7th chords, and octatonic scales. Strings: major seconds & major thirds, augmented triads, and whole tone scales. The instrument families and their materials are increasingly mixed together as the piece develops.
