Margarita Orfila composed this quartet in 1945 as an alternative version of the trio for violin, cello and piano of the same number. It is a work of maturity, written after other chamber music works such as Frisança, Barcarola and Scherzando for violin and piano, and Melodía, Leyenda and Tarantella for cello and piano. It consists of a single movement and carries the alternative title of Largo espressivo. We find inspired melodic designs that pass from one instrument to another as a serene and expressive dialogue, as well as delicious modulations that provide the harmonic contrast so characteristic of Orfila’s music.
