This work is based on the original composition “To Andalusia and beyond” for flute and piano, which can be found on my 2025 album entitled “Beyond”.
In 2016, following a tour in Andalusia, I was inspired to write a virtuosic flute work that explores the folklore of this beautiful and characteristic region of Spain.
Beginning with a Malagueña melody that I discovered among the collections of Felipe Pedrell, handed down to me by my godmother, I began to create sections for the piece, based on Andalusian musical forms such as the Rumba and the Soleá, as well as other free-form sections, such as the Nana (lullaby) and the flute cadenzas.
Following the premiere in 2017, I created a version for soprano saxophone, together with my brother Alastair. Some years later, the version for flute and string quintet was premiered at the Teatro Real in Madrid in June 2025 by Pilar Constancio and her colleagues from the Madrid Symphony Orchestra.
I created this new version for concert band in order to perform at the US National Flute Association’s 2026 Convention in Portland, Oregon, together with the US Airforce Band of the Golden West. It contains new material for band, including interludes reminiscent of the Pasodoble style, a core element of band repertoire in Spain.
