St Ambrose’s Christmas Eve hymn describes the time our Lord spent in his mother’s womb; and, in so doing, the earliest days of any human life. From the moment of conception, a child grows not only in strength and facility but also in self-awareness, humanity and grace, until they arrive, miraculously complete.
Likewise, this setting of the saint’s words grows steadily and almost imperceptibly from one note, sung quietly and simply by one voice, until the ‘Amen’ announces, with overwhelming joy, the coming of the divine into the world.
But this ending is also a beginning.
