Suite del Zodíac Xinès (Chinese Zodiac Suite) (Orq.)

This piece was originally written for double wind quintet, piano and percussion, and was commissioned by Macalester Chamber Winds of St. Paul, Minnesota. With an orchestration for two flutes, 2 oboes, 2 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 2 horns, 2 trumpets, trombone, piano, percussion and strings, the piece maintains and even increases the exotic colour of the original version.
According to the Chinese Zodiac, every year bears the name of an animal. Each animal has particular features that depict the person born under that sign. Out of the twelve animals of the Zodiac, I selected the six animals, which I thought could best be represented through music and would give the Suite the appropriate contrast.
