The Preludio dolente is written in the shape of a “mountain” regarding both the register and the level of tension. After a dark beginning in the low register, a poignant contrapuntal dialogue follows in two voices, which grow in complexity. After reaching the culminating point, the music returns to the initial atmosphere. In the Scherzetto the play between pizzicato and arco creates a great variety of effects: pizz-glissando, sul ponticello, harmonics, etc…All in a short and rapid movement full of contrast. The Funerale is a kind of funeral march with great dramatic intensity. The pizzicati of the left hand with open strings act as harmonic pedals of great expressive strength throughout the movement. The Finale adirato is very rhythmic with constant metric changes. The fast tempo alternates melodic passages with other more marked passages, all of great idiomatic virtuosity.
