This sonata is laid out in three movements, with the first “Allegro moderato” following a Sonata form with a modified reexposition. The lyricism of the first two main themes contrasts with a more rhythmic and tense development. The second movement is a short interlude, which acts as a kind of thematic introduction to the third movement. After an opposed dialogue between the two instruments, the saxophone presents an expressive theme softly accompanied by the piano. The third movement follows a freer form and is rhythmic in essence. Derived from the second movement, the first theme includes constant metrical changes. The second theme, which is generally in 6/8, develops the soft theme of the second movement. An extensive “cadenza” for the saxophone interrupts the intensity of the movement to prepare a long reexposition-based Coda, which is also highly rhythmic and virtuoso.
