The original version of this work piece was written in 2009, for trumpet and piano. In 2011 I wrote a version for saxophone quartet commissioned by the Saxaes group, which was premiered in April 2012 by the quartet Púrpura Pansa. There are several recordings of both versions. Finally, I have adapted the piece for clarinet quartet, by petition of Joseph Quilis, to whom it is dedicated. It was premiered on April 26, 2015, by the Clarinet Quartet “Vert” in the Ateneu Mercantil of Valencia, in the Mostra Internacional de Música Valenciana MIMV organized by the M. I. Acadèmia de la Música Valenciana.
This fantasy is drawn from Father Soler’s Fandango for keyboard, which largely reflects the virtuosity of both the trumpet and the piano. The most notable parameters which vary from the original source are the structural organization, thematic combination, personal use of harmony, abundance of polyrhythms, textural treatment of the characteristic bass ostinato, etc.
A detailed analysis of this work can be found in the book written by Andrés Valero-Castells: The music of F. Soler as an idea in modern composition, published in the collection Compendium Musicae N. 10 of the Institució Alfons el Magnànim (Diputación de Valencia, 2012).
