Classic forms are a model for new experiences. I wrote the Prelude and Fugue in C minor at the request of the pianist Michael Tsalka, initially to be performed on an early romantic period piano. Thus, the prelude has a writing that evokes the pianism of Mendelssohn, who was also a vindicator of J. S. Bach. The fugue, not scholastic, is for three voices, with a single subject built on the blues scale, without a countersubject, and with a 12/8 time signature that suggests the swing of jazz. This fugue can also be played effectively on the harpsichord.
