Even though the title of the piece indicates “small symphonic poem”, Montmagastre is not a descriptive work. Rather, it resembles dance music with a certain Catalan popular flair, but with an original theme. It is a very well-structured composition (like most of the works by this composer), written originally for cobla (traditional Catalan folkloric ensemble) in 1970. Some years later, the composer himself also arranged a version for orchestra.
