Cabiscol, for four soprano clarinets in Bb

With the aim of contributing to the literature for the clarinet quartet—a flexible and versatile ensemble with vast potential for sound color development—Cabiscol draws inspiration from the recapitulated binary structure commonly found in works from the late 18th century. Specifically, it focuses on musical examples by W. A. Mozart. This piece is written for a quartet of four B-flat soprano clarinets and utilizes a brief initial fragment, consisting of a broken major triad chord, as its essential thematic material. This motif is repeated persistently, at times almost obsessively, throughout the composition. The motivic and textural development, along with the harmonic structures, are rooted in tonal processes characteristic of Mozart’s style. However, the harmonic treatment introduces a “camouflage” effect, with cluster-like constructions contributing to the piece’s sound world.

A recorded version of this composition can be found on the album “Esencias Divertsiones 4”, performed by the Vert Clarinet Quartet in 2018.
