Impuls vital (Vital impulse)

Impuls vital was composed during the month of May, 2019, commissioned by the Duo Mireia Farrés – Mercè Hervada and Seed Music, to complete a CD that they recorded during the summer.

When composing music, I have always felt closely identified with the trumpet, and brass instruments in general, because of the great variety of expressive resources: the power of the sound, the spectacular nature, the overwhelming impact, the use of mutes, the dynamic contrast and, nowadays, by the advances of the performers in playing legato and cantabile with a beautiful sound. I wanted to capture all these features in this composition and display the characteristics of the trumpet in a true duo with the piano.

The title indicates the character of the piece: energy, impact and contrast at a rapid tempo with constant metric changes. Regarding form, the work follows a free Sonata form with a central space where a new more relaxed theme is presented in 4/2 giving the music time to unwind. Thus, the first theme is fast and vital, the second lyrical and expressive, and the development then follows manipulating various elements. The central part is as mentioned above, and a shortened and modified re-exposition leads us to a very bright final Coda.
