Terres catalanes (Catalan lands)

24.00

Written during the spring of 1992 when I was living in Portland (Oregon, USA). This rhapsody was the first composition in which I wanted to find a language of Catalan identity.  An orchestral work that was premiered by the l’Orquestra Simfònica del Vallès under my direction.

Terres catalanes is based on four main, original and contrasting themes linked together in a presentation-development form. The first theme is very lyrical and expansive, the second is also lyrical with a more melancholic tone. The third is a casual scherzo of Catalan ballet-type ternary rhythm that later becomes a new melody reminiscent of a sardana. A short interlude based on the head of the first song takes us to a slow central part entirely based on the popular song Plany.

This is an intimate, sad and emotional space. After a shortened and also modified reexposition of the first four themes, the rhapsody closes with the brightness of the Sardana-style melody combined with motifs from the scherzo.
