In the past I wrote a Sonata for viola and piano, a Concerto for viola and orchestra and several Chamber music pieces which include viola. I have always been fascinated by this instrument which has fewer repertory pieces compared to the violin or violoncello, and actually, has a very peculiar and beautiful sound. Sometimes, it can sound like a violin and some others like a violoncello, but is not a violin nor a cello, but a great instrument. I thought it was about time for me to write a solo viola piece.

Several years ago, Jesús Rodolfo played my Viola Concerto in Poland. After listening to his fabulous Cd with the Hindemith Viola solo pieces, I became motivated to compose the present Sonata. This piece is dedicated to him.

During these awful pandemic times, we all had more individual time to think, read and write music. Bombarded by devastating news all day from all over the world, I wanted to depict the different sensations of this period we all are living in each movement of the Sonata.
