The term, “Soliloquy” usually refers to an actor’s expression of thoughts or intimate feelings while he is alone on stage. Here I have used the term to designate the theme as expressed by the solo violin as the violinist is given free access to explore the vibrant sonority of the instrument in a long, unaccompanied statement. This is followed by a lyrical solo passage with a sonorous orchestral background. After a lively middle section with brilliant technical passages, the violin returns to the opening themes in the quiet conclusion. (James Niblock)
