The Messe Brève is a unique work in Delibes’ catalog, primarily known for his compositions in ballet and opera. With this piece, Delibes offers us a different perspective, immersing us in the choral realm of sacred music.
Originally written for two equal voices and organ, and structured in five movements, the Messe Brève presents an interesting feature: it includes the O salutaris hostia and excludes the Credo and Benedictus from the ordinary Mass. In some of its movements, we can observe the indications of “solo” and “tutti,” suggesting that the composer intended these passages to be sung by the members of the choir, adding an expressive and choral dimension to the work.
This special edition of the Messe Brève invites us to explore its melodic and harmonic beauty through the expressiveness of the mixed choir (SATB) and the accompaniment of a string orchestra. Thus, this Messe Brève takes on a new dimension, captivating the spirits of the performers and reaching the souls of the listeners.
Thanks to my friend and singer, Cristina Bosch, from the Choir of the Faculty of Pharmacy at the University of Barcelona, for introducing me to this musical gem. And now, thanks to this edition, I hope that many more choirs can enjoy the choral music of Delibes.
