Marked Andante, Antoni Botey i Badia completed the Elegy for violin and piano on July 26, 1917. The date on the manuscript also indicates it was composed in the town of Òrrius, where the Botey family spent their summers at a farmhouse known as Can Botey.
The manuscript includes a violin part and a “bass” part, which appears to be an addition, merely following the left hand of the piano. The final pizzicato cue suggests that this added voice was intended for a stringed instrument, possibly a double bass, but more likely a cello.
