Once Oriol Martorell heard my Four Songs on poems by Martí i Pol, he suggested the possibility of arranging the second song This murmur that we hear for choir a cappella for his Sant Jordi Choir. With great pleasure I accepted his request. I transcribed although I modified the harmony and the polyphony of the song considerably. The verse “This murmur that we hear” returns 4 times in the poem with a persistence, which progressively acquires more tension. The effects of humming insinuate the murmur, and the melodic chromatism gives direction to the music in its gradations and distensions.
“Everything has been prohibited”, nothing can be said, but the murmur, hope, and the passion of a nation remains, although beneath the surface.
