Commissioned by the Orquestra del Teatre Lliure during the fall of 1987 in Portland, OR. Originally, the piece was written for 14 instruments, but it gains in cohesion and strength when the strings are doubled. In 2003 it was slightly revised and enlarged. Its title comes from the Fusion of the thematic material in the last movement and from the chaining of the three unified movements without interruption in a globalizing whole.
The first movement has a mirror form following a generic A-B-A form. The second movement, in 6/4 has an elegiac character with a contrasting central section of cold colors in the piano, vibraphone and high strings. The last movement fusions the entire piece and in the coda reexposition it acquires a great rhythmic-dynamic power.
