Pieza para cuatro clarinetes (Piece for four clarinets)

This work travels through various musical styles such as jazz, the cobla and the music with an Andalusian flair. The initial theme is used as a “leitmotiv” (short and recurrent melody) which gives unity to the piece with a rondo-like structure. Several contrasting sections appear, a theme in a band-like style, a cadence with an Arabic character, and expressive theme with an air of Spanish popular music, a cobla and a canon in counterpoint in which the theme used in the first cadence reappears as a final coda. All this is bound together by the initial jazz theme which repeats and serves as a liaison. The harmony used in this fusion of styles has limited stridency, without ever moving away from the essentially tonal writing.

This piece was premiered in the Club Diario Levante during the concert by the Quartet de Clarinets Vert which took place on Friday 12th May, 2006.
