I have always asked myself why my first piece for guitar, Dues Suggestions, Op.23 (1979) has been so successful. Maybe it is because of the length of the piece (6 minutes), or the balance between the two pieces (slow and fast), or because it is easy to program in concerts or because it is a suitable piece for competition requirements, or even because of the absence of “scordatura”. I do not know. However, being motivated by innovation, I have not repeated the two movement structure in any other guitar pieces.

This is why I thought about writing Two new suggestions when Adam Levin commissioned me to write a new piece for guitar. The result is a work that is idiomatically written for the guitar, with an expressive first piece and a fast and virtuoso second piece.

The characteristic rhythm gives the title to the Siciliana, which is written in A-B-A form with a relaxed mood. Over the Bossa nova rhythm, the Brasilera combines “rasgueado” and “tambora” with dynamism. Some percussive slaps add a virtuoso effect to the piece.
